Strait of Hormuz: Saudi Arabia Responds to the Crisis with Four Logistic Moves

Saudi Arabia has just announced four strategic decisions to strengthen joint logistics operations among Gulf countries, right as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz threaten global trade. In an unstable context - where 20–30% of the world’s oil passes through amid Iranian drone attacks, U.S. sanctions, and skyrocketing prices - Riyadh is positioning itself as the GCC leader, aiming to make supply chains more resilient, faster, and cost-efficient.

The plan starts with a storage fee exemption for up to 60 days on intra-GCC imports and exports - cutting operating costs by 15–25% and easing the burden on shippers and businesses. Another key measure is the free circulation of refrigerated trucks from all Gulf countries - even when empty - allowing goods to move across the region without bureaucratic barriers and speeding up traffic. Meanwhile, the operating age limit for trucks rises to 22 years, including GCC vehicles, expanding the available fleet and reducing dependence on new trucks in a tight market.

Finally, the launch of the Gulf Storage Zones at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam will allocate dedicated container areas and operational spaces for each GCC nation, creating a land-based hub that partially bypasses the maritime risks of Hormuz.

These moves are no coincidence: they directly address the geopolitical volatility of March 2026, harmonizing regulations among Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain to achieve smoother supply chains and up to 20% cost reductions on storage and parking. For the global logistics sector, that means less exposure to maritime disruptions, stronger Saudi hubs, and enhanced regional synergies that unlock new competitive opportunities.

At Atlas Worldwide Shipping, we see massive potential: our global network aligns perfectly with these initiatives, enabling faster intra-Gulf operations and crisis-resistant logistics solutions.
